Tiling calculator: how many tiles do I need?

Put in the size of the floor or wall and your tile size. You'll see how many tiles and boxes to order, and roughly how much adhesive and grout.

Area to tile
7.2 m²
Tiles needed

Boxes

Adhesive (20kg)

Adhesive is based on about 4m² per 20kg and grout about 10m² per 5kg. Coverage varies with tile size and trowel notch, so check the bag.

How it works

  1. 1Measure the length and width of the floor, or the width and height of the wall. Split L-shaped rooms into rectangles and add them up.
  2. 2Take the tile size off the box in millimetres, for example 600 × 300mm.
  3. 3Add a cuts allowance. 10% suits most straight lays; go for 15% if you're laying on the diagonal or in herringbone.
  4. 4Check how many tiles come in a box so you know how many boxes to order.
  5. 5Keep a spare box back. Tile batches vary in shade, so buying all your tiles at once saves a mismatch later.
